iPhone Apps in the App Store hits the 10,000 mark

148Apps, which tracks and reviews iPhone Apps, says 10,000 applications have now been released on the iPhone App store (the site is named after the fact that you can add up to 148 applications to an iPhone or iPod touch).

A tribute page shows a mini icon for every application. And it also gives some interesting data. About 24% of apps are free; 35% cost $.99. The average cost is $3.12, including free apps. About 34% are games or entertainment, and there are 49 weather related apps for the iPhone despite the fact that a weather app is built in.

Sprint and Clearwire Finalize Merger

Today Sprint announced that it has completed the merger of its Xohm Wimax unit with Clearwire Corporation. Sprint contributed all of its 2.5 GHz spectrum and its WiMAX-related assets. Comcast, Intel, Time Warner Cable, Google and Bright House Networks all combined to contribute $3.2 billion in cash to help the company get started. Clearwire plans to provide Wimax-based high-speed wireless Internet services.

iBreath Breathalyzer and FM Transmitter for iPod

This may well be the strangest accessory for iPod we have seen. The device is called the iBreath iPod Breathalyzer and FM Transmitter. The gadget does just what it says and will check your breath and tell you if you have had a few too many to drive. It also broadcasts your tunes to your FM radio on unused frequencies.

Ten million 5 MP+ Samsung cameraphones sold this year

The megapixel race shows no sign of slowing down, what with 12 MP units to be available to implement in handsets from early next year. It’s been revealed by Samsung that the company has shifted ten million units, worldwide, of 5 MP and 8 MP cameraphones, to far this year. It’s wise to assume most of those sold were 5 MP phones, as the company has more 5 MP, than 8 MP handsets available on the market. This huge number was reached, in the second week of this month.

Tweeting the terror: How social media reacted to Mumbai

The minute news broke of the terrorist attacks on Mumbai, India, social media sites like Twitter were inundated with a huge volume of messages. CNN reports.

With more than 6 million members worldwide, an estimated 80 messages, or “tweets,” were being sent to Twitter.com via SMS every five seconds, providing eyewitness accounts and updates.Many Twitter users also sent pleas for blood donors to make their way to specific hospitals in Mumbai where doctors were faced with low stocks and rising casualties.

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic Goes On Sale

Nokia has made its touch-screen 5800 XpressMusic phone available in several markets, including: Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Finland, and others. Nokia didn’t mention when it will become available in other markets. Nokia also announced that it will cease selling handsets in Japan. It will keep its luxury Vertu brand, but Nokia will no longer develop phones for the Japanese market. Nokia didn’t explain how this will affect its plans to launch a premium MVNO service in Japan in 2009.

T-Mobile G1 now available in white

T-Mobile has announced on Wednesday that the T-Mobile G1 handset will now be available in a new color, white, adding to the currently available G1 in black or bronze. It will be priced at the same $179 with a two year contract as the other two handsets. Like the other handsets, the white G1 will support T-Mobile’s HSDPA- or UMTS-based 3G service a full HTML web browser to take advantage of the fast data network or its built-in Wi-Fi connection.

Nokia 6260 Slide announced

Nokia has announced their 6260 Slide handset, which looks to be their most feature-packed S40 phone, to date. Its design somewhat resembles the company’s 6220 Classic handset, only with a slider form factor. The 6260 also sports a new style of d-pad, which, says Nokia “great mobile Internet experience”.

Verizon Wireless Announces the Samsung Omnia

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it will be selling the Samsung Omnia. The Omnia, which was first announced earlier this year, includes Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface as well as Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. Features include a 3.2-inch wide touch display, GPS, stereo Bluetooth, WiFi, and 8 GB of internal memory plus a memory card slot. It has a 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus, geo-tagging, auto-panorama, stabilizer, face detection, smile detection, and video editing. FM radio and auto-rotation round out the features. The Omnia will be one of the first phones able to access Verizon’s new VZAppsZone, where users can discover and download third-party content. The Omnia will be available via sales channels starting November 26 and in Verizon Wireless retail stores on December 8. It will cost $250 after rebate with new agreement.

Motorola Attila touchscreen handset sees daylight

An all-touchscreen handset (the first Motorola Windows Mobile handset without a hardware keypad), from Motorola, known as the Attila, has leaked on the Internet. By default, it looks to sport an Apple iPhone-like theme.
