Number portability comes to Canada

Wireless carriers in Canada have agreed to let consumers keep their mobile number when switching carriers. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association said that while the agreement has been made, a start date has not been set. Number portability has been in effect in the US since November 2003.

Today: One year of number portability

Today marks one year since local number portability was enabled for the top 100 markets in the United States. According to the FCC, over 8 million people have changed carriers but kept their numbers in that time.
Also according to the FCC, about 750,000 people have changed a landline number to a mobile phone.

Sprint and Verizon to lower LNP fees

Both Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless today announced that the two companies will lower the monthly surcharge for expenses related to local number portability. The controversial surcharges have made the two companies over $250 million this year.
Verizon is cutting the fee from $.45 to $.05 while Sprint PCS is going from $.40 to $.25.

2.8 million port their numbers

It was announced today that since November, 2.8 million Americans have taken advantage of number portability. The FCC says that the number had only a minor effect on the overall “churn rate” for the wireless industry.
May 24th is the number portabilty deadline for all markets–November was just the top 100 markets.

AT&T Wireless leads number port complaints

The FCC today released a status update for number portability complaints [download, PDF]. Overall complaints are fairly low, but AT&T Wireless has a large lead:

AT&T Wireless - 2787
Sprint PCS - 1445
Verizon Wireless - 933
T-Mobile - 854
Cingular Wireless - 849
Nextel - 420

Japan to get number portability in 2006

T-Mobile makes big gains from number ports

According to Reuters, T-Mobile USA is having the best luck with number portability thus far. In the last quarter, the company added 1M subscribers–more than Cingular Wireless and AT&T Wireless combined. This brings the total to over 13M. T-Mobile UK posted similar numbers, but didn’t have to contend with the new pressure of LNP.
