HD video at a decent frame rate isn’t something that many handset can claim to offer, but things could change on that front in the near future. A new chip, the Renesas SH7370 will offer 1080p video playback at 30 fps at a size that is suitable for inclusion in a mobile phone. Manufacturers are receiving the first units of the 1 cm square chip at the moment; its size belies its power: 1080p H.264 decoding and encoding and Dolby Digital 5.1 channel output. It’s a powerful chip, but given the pace at which mobile phones are progressing it’s just the sort of power that is needed.
