Sprint and Microsoft announced new mobile search services today that take advantage of Live Search and GPS information to provide local results for searches performed from mobile phones. From the home page of Sprint’s WAP portal, users can search for content, local listings, maps and the web for information. With GPS services enabled, the search will automatically filter results and provide only those in the vicinity of the phone. This can be turned on or off. Users can also speak the listing for which they are looking rather than type it in. This requires a separate download of Microsoft’s Tellme technology. The new location-based search is available immediately, while the voice-powered search service will be available at a later date. Both are free.
