PalmSource (the maker of PalmOS) has joined the Linux Phone Standards Forum, a new association that’s attempting to standardize a Linux based mobile phone OS. PalmSource is betting its future on Linux and is a founding partner of LiPS.

…For mass-market telephony terminals, standards that enable key applications and services to be deployed with a high degree of interoperability are at least as important as performance characteristics.

The founding members are ARM, Cellon, Esmertec, France Telecom/Orange, FSM Labs, Huawei, Jaluna, MIZI Research, MontaVista Software, Open-Plug and PalmSource, Inc.

Motorola is also working on a Linux based OS that it’s calling JUIX.
