Skipping over WiFi Nokia today announced plans to support WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e) in the future, including both network infrastructure and mobile phones. While not officially a standard yet, WiMAX has the promise of providing very fast speeds over large amounts of space (opposed to WiFi’s limited signal strength). WiMAX would be a data-only solution.
As part of the WiMAX initiative, Nokia partnered with Intel. Currently working WiMAX installations are fixed point solutions, Nokia wants to have a mobile solution.
WiMAX IEEE 802.16e is expected to be officially agreed upon later this year.
