Review Nokia 6310i

March 31st, 2003 · Source · No Comments

Functions of 6310i are almost identical to 6310. So, in this article we’ll describe only the main changes of these two phones. If you are interested in detail description of all features, read, please, review of Nokia 6310.

A renewed version of the phone supports a third band GSM1900. It allows to characterize this handset as a real business-phone, which can be used not only in Europe, but also in America. This function should be realized earlier and the problem of its postponing is not obvious. The second change of 6310i is a pastel blue display backlighting (others screen parameters remained the same). The information is highly visible in this case and the phone looks more attractive. Color of keypad backlighting was also changed to pastel blue and all the characters became more visible on keys. If to say about keys shape, phone dimensions and color, Nokia 6310i is absolutely analogues to its predecessor - 6310.

The main change is menu concerned. Two pre-installed Java-applications can be found in Application now. They demonstrate Java possibilities.

Nokia Converter allows to convert units, for example you can input 25 F and know how much degrees is it in Celsius. The same is with length and weight measures and etc.

World Clock. This feature is realized as Java-application. You can search by a city name and view time in any city from the list. It’s rather simple.

Java-application can be renewed via Wap and deleted. A total memory pool is not large – only 140 Kb. It was selected at the expense of 1 minute of voice memo records. So, a total time of voice memo recording is 2 minutes instead of 3 minutes as it was in Nokia 6310.

As for me, Java-applications are downloaded during rather long time. Nokia Converter has been running about 7-9 seconds. Unfortunately, we can’t compare time of downloading of these applications in 6310i and phones from Siemens, as these programs are different on these phones. We try to compare a “heavy” game, which works in Siemens Sl45i, and Nokia Converter in Nokia 6310i. To say the truth, it’s not a correct comparison, because Java realization and phones release dates are different (SL45i was launched earlier), but, nevertheless, we think that phone from Siemens works a little bit quicker.

There is one more pre-installed Java-application – game Racket, which is a version of tennis. In our opinion, it’s rather simple and boring game.

As you remember, a new feature (bluetooth) was added to 6310, but its realization was far from ideal. This accessory was not compatible in automatic mode. It can be connected manually, it even worked, though the phone has reloaded from time to time.

Test of 6310i showed that the realization of bluetooth feature here is not the best either. Now you can add this device in the list of compatible devices (it wasn’t possible earlier), but later the phone loses this connection. When you transmit data in bluetooth-mode, the phone can automatically reload (nothing changed here). As before, this feature works incorrectly, though in manual mode the handset finds and compatible with many devices.

There is also no automatic key guard in this phone (though it was available in Nokia 6510). Probably, it can be explained by political or marketing reasons, as there are no technical limitations.

Among small novelties, we can notice a new menu item in the menu messages – Create e-mail. Unfortunately, built-in mail client is missed, this option allows only to send SMS to e-mail. It will be useful for those, who frequently use this feature. Other will even don’t pay attention to it.

Impressions

Nokia 6310i costs 20-30 USD more than 6310. You can purchase it if you really need a third band, there are no other reasons to buy this phone (if select between 6310 and 6310i) or change 6310 to a new model.

Nokia 6210 (predecessor of 6310) was one of the best phones in terms of price/quality in its class. Nokia 6310 and 6310i are not so successful; they lose to the phone of their class not only in functions, but also in delivery kit and price. The main advantage of 6310(i) is a longer operating time of lithium-polymer battery. Other features are comparable or worse than the phones of rivals.
