Google announced that it has updated Gmail and Google Calendar for mobile – more exactly, for iPhone and Android.

The new Gmail for mobile uses browser technologies like HTML5 and Gears, thus it’s “a lot faster” when it comes to opening emails, searching and navigating. Also, even though your network connection is slow or non-existent, Gmail still lets you compose messages and open recently-read emails.

Other enhancements include a “new look and feel of messages” and a “floaty bar” that lets you quickly archive or delete messages.

The updated Gmail supports all Android smartphones and iPhone / iPod touch OS 2.2.1 or above. To access it, simply point your mobile browser to gmail.com.

Google also updated its web-based Calendar for iPhone and Android, so now you can edit Google Calendar directly on your handset.

The new Google Calendar can be found at google.com/calendar/gp and it’s available for all Android devices and iPhone / iPod touch OS 2.2.1 or above (only in English, for the moment).
