Today Verizon Wireless announced that it has officially selected Long Term Evolution (LTE) for its 4G wireless technology. LTE is the evolutionary path for current GSM and HSPA technologies, rather than the CDMA technology currently used by Verizon Wireless. By choosing LTE, Verizon Communications and Vodafone, owners of Verizon Wireless, can pool resources and offer customers a wide range of services between the U.S. and markets where Vodafone has a presence. Verizon and Vodafone will begin trialling LTE systems next year and will use equipment from Motorola, Nokia-Siemens and Nortel, among others. Verizon and Vodafone are also already having preliminary discussions with device manufacturers about the products that will be offered to end users.
