AU Optronics designed two new LCD panels for mobile devices that are readable in direct sunlight and are very thin. The thinner of the two is a 1.9-inch diagonal display that measures 0.69mm in thickness. The second is a 4.3-inch multi-touch capable LCD that is 2.2mm thick and has a resolution of 480 x 272. It uses in-cell design, which allows it to be touch-capable without adding more layers of glass and also keeps the weight down. The LCDs will go into production next year and could be incorporated into handset designs by the end of 2008.
