Sprint today revealed a bit more about its WiMax rollout plans while confirming that its previous announcements are still on track. The company will still begin testing the technology in Chicago and Washington, DC. Though Motorola and Samsung, respectively, were named as infrastructure partners for the two cities, Sprint has added Nokia as a third equipment provider. Sprint still expects commercial rollout of the service to begin in late 2007 with coverage of 100 million people by the end of 2008. Sprint also has announced initial device and handset plans. Samsung will offer 6 devices including Ultra mobile PCs and media players. This could include form factors such as the folding, twisting SPH-9000 UMPC. LG will develop an “infotainment” device and Nokia will also begin developing handsets for the launch. In addition, computers will be able to access the network with data cards as well as laptops with built-in WiMax chipsets.
