Sprint Nextel recently began trialling a near-field communications based mobile payment system in the Bay Area. Specifically, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system and Jack In The Box fast food restaurants in Oakland have agreed to allow users to use NFC-equipped mobile phones to make payments as well as discover and redeem discounts on services. Samsung is providing the handsets and Western Union is providing the mobile payment system. Users will have accounts with Western Union and purchases will be debited from stored credit on each handset.
