Today at CTIA Wireless Qualcomm announced its first EV-DO Rev. B chipset. The MSM7850 will deliver faster data rates for phones, up to 9.3 Mbps on the downlink on average over 5 MHz of spectrum. The technology can technically deliver much faster speeds of 73.5 Mbps, but will be limited in real-life conditions. The MSM7850 will be fully backward compatible. It will sample later this year. Qualcomm is also providing a software upgrade to its CSM6800 base station equipment to make it compatible with the Rev. B chipset. The software upgrade will be available by the end of March 2007.
