MTV Networks, RealNetworks, and Verizon Wireless have joined forces to shake up the music download scene by creating an integrated music download service accessible from a PC, portable music device, or mobile phone. The trio each bring their own area of expertise to the fold: MTV’s content and branding, Real’s Rhapsody distribution technology, and Verizon’s proven experience in mobile downloads with its VCAST Music service.
Through the agreement, MTV and Real are forming a separate entity to be known as Rhapsody America. Michael Bloom, previously General Manager of MTV Networks’ URGE, will lead Rhapsody America, with the brand being the unified front for Real and MTV content in the US.
Rhapsody will be fully integrated into VCAST Music, and in the coming months Verizon will launch technology that will send a duplicate copy of songs purchased on the move directly to the user’s Rhapsody account, accessible on a compatible PC. Rhapsody America’s exclusive agreement with Verizon Wireless is said to be long-term, with a marketing campaign to be launched through Verizon Wireless stores nationwide soon.
