Today Motorola announced its next-generation push-to-talk technology that works with CDMA EVDO Rev. A networks, rather than iDEN. The PTT over cellular, or PoC, system uses a special piece of software on the phone to make PTT calls work via Rev. A networks. It provides functionality similar to its iDEN-based PTT technology, and lets users communicate walkie-talkie style with the push of a button, though the underlying technology is different. The technology also supports other push-to-X services. Motorola’s PoC will compete with Qualcomm’s QChat service, which does the same thing on Rev. A networks. Motorola’s PoC is the technology that Verizon has chosen to power its PTT services.
