Full Color OLED Displays Ready For Prime Time

May 17th, 2007 · Source · No Comments

Both Samsung and LG Philips announced QVGA active matrix OLED (AMOLED) displays today. AMOLED displays can display bright, full color images and don’t require a backlight or secondary glass layer like LCD displays. This reduces the amount of space and power needed for the display. The Samsung AMOLED is a 2.2″ QVGA model capable of displaying 24 bit color. It is .5mm thick, and reportedly ready for mass production. The LG Philips model is a 4″ QVGA model capable of displaying 16 bit color. It is only .15mm thick and made using amorphous silicon, so it is also flexible. The LG Philips model is not in mass production yet, however the company will not need to re-tool its factory to begin manufacturing it.
