Several companies have recently announced femtocell products, highlighting the growing need for these mini base stations in the home environment where cell signals do not reach. Similar in theory to Wi-Fi hotspots, femtocell products, such as 2Wire’s HomePortal BaseStation, plug into existing cable or DSL Internet connections, automatically configure themselves to connect to a carrier’s backhaul network, and provide cellular voice and data coverage for the home. The two main vendors in this space so far are 2Wire and AirWalk Communications, and both provide GSM-based and CDMA-based products that include HSPA and EV-DO 3G data capabilities. Enhancing in-home cellular coverage can allow consumers who have typically had poor signal propagation in their homes to drop their landline phones altogether in favor of their cells.
