Ericsson is working on a software upgrade to current GSM/EDGE networks that will boost data speeds up to 1 Mbps. Called EDGE Evolution, the enhancement will improve data performance by increasing coverage, latency and spectrum efficiency. The upgrade builds on the recent 3GPP standardization of EDGE Evolution and will have significant repercussions for the world’s 2 billion GSM subscribers, providing broadband speeds for those not served by WCDMA/HSPA networks. Ericsson said the software will be available by 2009.
