Earthlink will begin offering a phone that works on both its municipal Wi-Fi coverage as well as from a wireless base station in the home. Subscribers can make and receive calls anywhere there is coverage, just as they would with a cell phone. The phone and base station cost $100 and service plans run $15 per month for 500 domestic outgoing minutes and unlimited incoming or $25 for unlimited domestic talk time. The handsets are only available to people covered Anaheim’s municipal network but Earthlink is expected to roll the service out to other metro areas. This would pit Earthlink against local unlimited cellular carriers like MetroPCS and Cricket. T-Mobile’s @Home service also allows subscribers with dual-mode phones to make unlimited calls from that carrier’s Wi-Fi hotspots. They are expected to roll out the service nation-wide soon.
