Consumers Union says no to locking cellphones

April 7th, 2004 · Source · No Comments

The Consumers Union has started a campaign to stop the common practice of locking cellphones to a carrier. The group is asking the FCC to use it’s might to help consumers by allowing carrier changes without needing a new phone. However, MobileTracker has noticed that this can be less of a problem than is thought:

  • We got the chance to test a Motorola V400 from Cingular, and it was unlocked. It was not a media review unit, and was used on both the Cingular and T-Mobile network.
  • T-Mobile will unlock your phone after a simple customer service call.
