Sony has created a wireless data transfer technology based on ultra wideband called TransferJet. TransferJet will allow electronic devices to transfer files from one to another at speeds of up to 560 Mbps. The technology, which operates on a 4.48GHz frequency, requires that the two devices be touching or within 30mm (about one inch) of one another, similar to near field communications. Sony said multiple devices in close proximity won’t impact performance, security features are built in, and TransferJet won’t interfere with other wireless systems. Sony imagines the technology will allow users to transfer video or pictures captured on mobile devices such as cell phones to televisions or other electronics. Right now it has developed chips small enough to fit into dongles, but has yet to convince any other companies to use the technology.
