KDDI Boosts Infrared Transfer Speeds

January 30th, 2008 · Source [Symbian Freak] · No Comments

KDDI’s research lab has improved infrared transfer speeds from a theoretical limit of 4 Mbps to 1 Gbps. The gains were achieved by using a new kind of semi-conductor laser that can “blink” faster than the existing LED systems. This faster laser is paired with a larger piece of non-volatile memory so data is not lost during the transfer, which also improves stability. KDDI claims an entire CD could be transferred between devices such as a PC and mobile phone in under 1 second.
