Melbourne University researchers have created a new personal-area networking chip that can transmit data through the air at 5Gbps. The CMOS chip measures five by five millimeters, uses 60GHz frequencies and has a range of 10 meters, about the same as Bluetooth. The GiFi chip has a one-millimeter-wide antenna, consumes less than two watts of power, and will cost less than $10 to manufacture. The researchers say that the chip will be available for consumer electronics–including mobile phones–in about one year, and could surpass the capabilities of UWB.
