Cingular to use RealNetworks for 3G video streaming

CTIA IT 2005 — Cingular and RealNetworks announced an agreement that will have Cingular using Real’s Helix OnlineTV platform to deliever video. Cingular will be launching a video streaming service once its HSDPA 3G network gets off the ground later this year.

Real will provide Cingular, the nation’s leading wireless carrier, with a comprehensive video solution including application development for packaging mobile content, hosting the mobile video service on behalf of Cingular, and delivering the streaming content to a variety of new handsets for the carrier’s 3G UMTS/HSDPA network.

Real’s Helix technology is currently in use on over 30 million handsets worldwide. It’s able to handle RealAudio, RealVideo and 3GPP formats.
