Qualcomm announced two new modems that support the 3GPP2 Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) standard. The Cell Site Modem CSM8900 and the Mobile Data Modem MDM8900 will make use of multiple-input, multiple-output antenna technologies to boost mobile broadband capabilities. Once the designs are approved, which should be before June, the modems will support theoretical wireless data speeds of 40 Mbps on the downlink and 10 Mbps on the uplink. The chips are expected to be available to handset and modem makers in the first quarter of 2008.
