Nokia Siemens Networks is set to begin trialling a 3G femto cell product in early 2008. Called 3G Femto Home Access, the miniature base station (resembling a Wi-Fi router) will enhance WCDMA coverage in consumers’ homes. As with other femto cell products, 3G Femto Home Access connects to wireless network operators’ backhaul networks via a broadband internet connection. It also uses a new gateway to allow multiple carriers to offer the 3G Femto Home Access solution without making changes to their existing core networks. Nokia Siemens hopes to release the product by the third quarter of 2008.
