Digitimes Research: optical zoom to become standard for 5-megapixel camera phones

According to Digitimes Research, camera lenses with optical zoom will become a standard feature for 5-megapixel camera phones. In addition auto focus will become an integral part of such phones. Recently, Japan’s operator NTT DoCoMo has announced Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot SO905iCS with a 5-megapixel camera, 3x optical zoom and auto focus. Digitimes Research reports that the current trend emerged from 2006 with 3-megapixel cameras and auto focus.

Handsets with a built-in 2-megapixel camera will account for 50% of camera phones sales in the global market in 2008. However 3-megapixel models will win the leadership in 2009, the ratio will reach 665 of the global shipments in 2010. In all, camera phones will account for 82% of global phone shipments in 2008, up from 72% in 2007.
