Despite bringing in $19 billion for the federal government, the House Telecommunications Subcommittee (HTS) voiced disappointment over the FCC’s inability to sell the D block of spectrum during the recent 700 MHz auction. The 10 MHz portion of unsold spectrum covers the entire country and lawmakers were hoping it would be used to create a national public safety network. The HTS also expressed dismay that the auction winners–AT&T and Verizon Wireless–were the already dominant incumbent players and not new competitors. The FCC and the HTS are discussing how the D block should be re-auctioned off, but have yet to settle on any new conditions.
