AT&T signed an agreement to use Qualcomm’s MediaFLO technology to deliver mobile video and TV services to wireless subscribers in the U.S. by late 2007. Like competitor Verizon Wireless, AT&T will offer mobile TV and some video-on-demand content from channels such as CBS, Comedy Central, Fox, MTV, and NBC directly on mobile phones. With many of Europe’s GSM carriers picking the DVB-H mobile video standard, AT&T’s new agreement with MediaFLO marks a different path for the nation’s largest network operator, which will have to spend $1 billion to build a MediaFLO network. The operator will also have to work with its handset partners to incorporate Qualcomm’s MediaFLO technology into future designs. Potential pricing information and other terms were not disclosed.
