AT&T VP Jim Cicconi today said the company now supports FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s proposal for 700 MHz spectrum. Martin’s plan called for any networks built in the new spectrum to allow any device to work on it and any application to run on it, banning the typical device-locking business models used on wireless networks today. However, since Martin’s proposal does not affect current networks, AT&T no longer sees the plan as a threat to its business, despite a July 12 filing from another AT&T VP saying just that. Every major carrier as well as the CTIA has written the FCC to protest the spectrum use proposal, AT&T is the first to break ranks.
