There’s a new iPhone unlocking method in town this week, which achieves a full unlock using only a Turbo SIM card.
An Australian iPhone hacker claims to be the first person to have successfully unlocked AppleÂ’s mobile phone so it can be used on any network.
Australian iPhone fan ozbimmer, already known for several attempts that have come close to unlocking the iPhone, has publicised a method that uses a small third-party device called Turbo SIM, which is a tiny SIM card “sleeve” that fits between the phone and the regular SIM card, made by an obscure Czech firm.
Detailed instructions are available online, but the process basically involves copying the information from your AT&T SIM onto a Turbo SIM, then switching your AT&T SIM for your carrier SIM. This allows the Turbo SIM to piggyback on your carrier SIM, and apparently gives you full calling, SMS, and EDGE capabilities.
The unlocking process is still a bit complicated and requires SSH on your iPhone, or another phone you can use in order to copy the information to the Turbo SIM. You’ll also need some free software and the $80 Turbo SIM. However, this is much easier (and cheaper) than previous SIM cloning methods, and lets you use your phone to copy information rather than requiring a card reader. We may see ready-made “iPhone unlocking SIMs” sold sometime in the future, although an actual software unlock would trump any kind of hardware solution. The hacks are always improving, so you’ll probably hear about an even better one sometime soon, but the Turbo SIM looks to be a good choice if you need an unlocked iPhone right now.
