President of AT&T’s wireless network services Richard Burns recently noted in an interview that AT&T will be announcing its planned network upgrade to HSUPA sometime in the next several weeks. HSUPA improves upon AT&T’s HSDPA 3G network by bolstering upload speeds from 120 Kbps to between 500 and 800 Kbps under optimal conditions. AT&T expects the upgraded network will cover 200 markets with 170 million people by the end of 2007, and will soon announce further upgrades to additional markets slated for 2008. Burns also said AT&T will not upgrade its entire network to 3G in 2008, leaving some areas with only EDGE coverage.
